End of Weight-Loss Journey in Sight

My weight-loss journey is slowly coming to an end. It has taken a little over 4 months but I am now down over 41lbs. My total goal, after some negotiation, is 47 lbs. I had originally wanted to lose 57 lbs. However, after some discussion and some additional analysis, I was convinced that 47 lbs was healthy weight loss and 57 lbs would be too much. It really hasn't been that bad. I have missed pasta and popcorn but I have had a little of each during the last month or so.

I am going to transition to the maintenance portion of this plan Starting October 1. They will help me learn more about balancing and help me to add in items.

We just spent a week in Hawaii. I did enjoy shaved ice, ice cream and some chocolate. I weighed in today and lost another 2.1 lbs. I have learned to balance and to have portion control. I can have those things just not everyday. It kind of falls into the "Everything in Moderation" mindset. I can do that.

I also have found ways to make being active fun. The gym is ok. I don't really enjoy running but I do it. I have joined flag football and soccer teams with my husband. It has been a great way to get an hour of exercise and have fun.

I am finally back in a size 8. I have been wearing double digit sizes for well over 10 years. I plan to take some of my favorite clothing items to a seamstress to have them altered.

Anyway, I'm glad that this part of the process is almost over. I am looking forward to being able to maintain this weight and to continue being active. I'm also looking forward to buying new ski pants!

P.S. My boobs have not shrunk! I went in for a fitting and I did not lose a cup size. I didn't think I'd get to keep these.

My Continuing Road to a Healthy Weight

It has been 10 weeks since I started my weight loss journey at JumpStart MD. I have loss a total of 28.1 lbs and 2.5" from my waist. I have also reduced my percentage of body fat by over 2%.  Little by little this is coming off. I am now with in 9.1 lbs of my first goal and 29.1 lbs from my ultimate goal. Unfortunately, I've lost some of my boobs too. Oh well, can't have everything!

The process has gotten easier. I have gotten into a routine of eating and have found that it is actually pretty easy. My diet consists mainly lean meat and fish, cheese and fruits and veggies. I can now eat at restaurants with out stressing. I find that I no longer obsess about food like I did when I first started the program. I keep the things I can eat on hand. The only real challenge is when we go on road trips. It's difficult at times to find food I can eat at fast food places. However, Arby's small roast beef sandwiches contain 3oz of meat so I can eat the meat and toss the bun. I usually add some fruit or veggies from the cooler to make it a meal.

I do still miss popcorn and chocolate. At some point, they will show me how to work that stuff back in. Everything in moderation, Right?!

As for exercise, I try to make it to the gym 3-4 times a week. Most weeks I am successful but I don't stress if I can't make it. Since I have the attention span of a 4 year old, I can only handle about 60 minutes of working out. 75-90 minute yoga classes kill me. I can only take that music and the hushed, serious atmosphere for so long. Not to mention, I have no balance and tend to fall over. Groupon and Living Social have helped me vary my work out. There are always deals on fun new work out options. I just bought one to learn Krav Maga. Can't wait! I might get knocked over in that class but I should fall over on my own. I do have an expiring Groupon for a boot camp class. I probably should try that first. It seemed like a good idea when I clicked "buy". It seems a bit intimidating now.

Now I have to come up with some pithy responses to the "Nay Sayers" and "Debby Downers". I do not have a ton of those people around me but there are a few. Some of them still ask me if I am still on my "weird" diet or want to tell me how they did a similar diet and gained it all back. I find their negativity odd. I have always been encouraging with other people's weight loss and fitness goals. I think it's great when people want to try to be healthier. Anyway, for now I ignore them or just smile and nod.

However, the vast majority of my friends and family are super supportive. I am lucky that my husband goes along with the program. He's lost a several pounds too.

The Weight Loss/Fitness Journey Continues

So my quest continues. Since May 3, 2013, I have lost 17.8 lbs and 1.5" off my waist. I have set 2 goals - an intermediate goal and a final goal. For my intermediate goal I want to lose 37 lbs and my final goal is to lose 57lbs. Once the weight is gone I can switch to JumpStart's maintenance program where other foods I like (popcorn) get added back in.

The eating part of the diet has become easier and does not really require much thought. When I started the process I felt like I was obsessing about what I was eating and when. Now, I just eat. I know the portion sizes and what is appropriate to eat for weight loss. I mainly eat lean meats, veggies, fruits, low fat cheeses and pistachios. Being a carnivore, I can live with that diet.

I like wine! Giving up having an occasional glass of wine was really not an option. My preferred beverage, Red wine has 7 grams of carbs. However, my new summer beverage, Prosecco and Champagne only has 1.8 grams of carbs. So now, I have a glass of sparkling wine instead. Feels like a celebration in every glass!

I even figured out a way to make no/low carb hot chocolate. I used almond milk, unsweetened cocoa powder and stevia. It was pretty good. I am also supposed to have 8 oz of low fat milk a day so I could use milk in place of the almond milk.

Other challenges have been eating with friends and family. However, I have found that everyone is very supportive and that I can eat with everyone else even if I have to make slight modifications to my meal. Over the weekend, everyone in our group had fried fish and french fries. YUM! So I just sauteed my fish in a pan using Pam and had a salad. It was good and filling.

The fitness piece is coming along too. I have some work out buddies and the gym is close. I still don't enjoy working out. I don't get that "rush" from running. I usually walk on the treadmill. I will also take a spin class and the occasional Daily Method class. I am also considering yoga but I really don't have the attention span for a 75 to 90 minute class. I do about 60 minutes max.

I consider fitness to be a personal challenge. I have met others who are a bit competitive about it. They spend their time looking at people's screens on the spin bikes or treadmills to compare calories lost or distance gone. I really don't get that concept. I'm not training for a marathon. I'm just trying to get healthier. I really do not care that they burned more calories or road a quarter mile more. I'm just happy that I got to the gym and did something to build endurance and muscle.

The good thing is I need to look for some new clothes. The down side is that some of my favorite clothes are a little big. Not a bad problem to have and definitely a 1st World problem. I may just take some of my favorites to a tailor and have them taken it.

Some Curly-Haired Girl's Thoughts on Facebook

I like Facebook. I find it entertaining and useful. I use it to keep in touch with friends and family, communicate with my law fraternity members and publicize my favorite charity event, Bark For Life San Francisco.

I find the anti-facebook people amusing. I have friends and acquaintances who do not us it. However, instead of just say, "It's not my thing", many people like to take this big political stand about how Facebook invades their privacy, is a huge waste of everyone's time, creates too much drama, etc. Facebook is a tool that YOU control. Don't want it to "invade your privacy" don't put private information on there. As for wasting time, almost anything could do that. Many of these same people who will pontificate for hours about the time-wasting effect of Facebook spend a lot of time playing Candy Crush. As for drama, Facebook does not create drama, people create drama.

As with anything in a free country, using Facebook is a choice. If you don't want to use it don't but making it a political stand is a bit ridiculous.

My favorite (eye roll) are the people that post about how awful work is, how they have a cold or post passive aggressive comments about other friends/family. I like to keep my posts mainly positive or use them to promote ideas and events I believe in. I NEVER post about work or co-workers and if I have something to say to someone I would rather say it to them as opposed to posting it on Facebook.

First, negative posts about work is dangerous, especially when you are complaining about co-workers or your boss. People get fired for that type of thing. It's better to use common sense and keep the negative work comments to your self or shared with friends during happy hours.

Facebook can be a useful tool to promote your business or practice. Positive comments about your office go along way but negative comments can make a person look unprofessional.

Second, just because someone does not post about how busy there are at work or how challenging their life is at the moment does not mean that everything is all rosy. It just means that they value their privacy or perhaps do not need the attention and sympathy that posting such a comment on Facebook elicits. Everyone is busy and everyone has issues they have to deal with. I find that the people who complain the least are usually the busiest. Complaining about being busy wastes time that could be used to accomplish the task at hand.

Finally, there are the people who post about having a cold or migraine. I have suffered with migraines for many years and the last thing I can do when I have a migraine is look at the computer or deal with the sound the keyboard makes when typing about my migraine.

Don't get me wrong, I definitely understand the people who post about having a serious/terminal illness or who are undergoing surgery. Sometimes it is the most effective way for them to communicate about their status without having to tell it over and over. Plus, those individuals truly do need support and encouragement to help them battle to overcome this serious ailment.

These thoughts have been rattling around in my head for a while now and I wanted to get them out on "paper". Feel free to agree or disagree. I always love a good conversation.

My new mission

Week 1

Pounds loss this week (5.8lbs)

For many years I have watched my weight go up and up. I have finally decided I have had enough and I need help with my weight loss. So on May 3, I went to JumpStart MD in Los Gatos and began my process. I thought I would blog about the transition and see what happens.

I have tried to diet on my own, used Weight Watchers, personal trainers and other programs. None of those created any lasting effects. I did really tone up with trainer but I did not want to change my eating habits. So it was great till I stopped those work outs. Weight Watchers stressed me out. Plus I really don't like to count all those points. I obsessed about my points every day.

So, this new program is supposed to help me learn to eat differently and incorporate exercise to make a lasting change. This first week was ok. I cannot have things like potatoes, pasta, rice, popcorn initially. Eventually moderate amounts of those things get added back. I have weekly one on one appointments with a nurse/clinician, medication, vitamins and MIC shots. The meds seem to be helping with cravings. One of my co-workers brought in a bunch of chocolate. It's day 2 with that here in the office and I still have no desire to rip into the bags. Keep your fingers crossed.

Hello Again!

Wow, it's been almost 3 years since I have written anything. My poor husband has been the only outlet for my rants. So I thought I would give him a break and pontificate here.

I have a lot going through my head so I'll start slow. Enjoy and feel free to comment. I like intelligent discourse. The world seems to be in serious need of intelligent discourse. I often read the comment section on news stories. Not a lot of intelligence evident on those sites. Some of it is down right scary. The negativity towards women on those sites are concerning.
